Foundations marks the beginning of the Studio Beck Collection — a study in sculptural form, materiality, and slow, considered making. What began as a chance encounter in Barcelona evolved into an 18-month journey of collaboration, refinement, and intention.
The making of
FOUNDATIONS.
JULY 2024 — BARCELONA
In July 2024, we walked into a small ceramic studio in Barcelona. What started as a casual morning of wandering the streets of the city turned into a three-hour conversation about form, process, and possibility. Surrounded by clay forms and glaze samples, a shared design language quickly emerged, and the idea of a Studio Beck collaboration sparked an untapped energy in us.
Full of inspiration, we wandered to Mercat de la Boqueria for our favourite tapas plates — still talking, still turning over the ideas running through our minds — before heading back to our hotel room to begin sketching concepts.
That evening, sketches drawn in a hotel room began translating ideas into tangible forms. Inspired by the architecture, history, art, and culture we had been immersed in throughout our European travels, the drawings explored weight, proportion, repetition, and silhouette — the foundations of what would become the collection. Soon after, these ideas were developed into the first prototypes in Barcelona, marking the transition from concept to object.
FROM SKETCH TO FORM
SEPT 2025 — BARCELONA
A year later, we returned to the studio to refine the collection in person. Together, we reviewed proportions, surface textures, and most importantly, the glazing palette — testing tones, finishes, and depth. This stage was about precision and restraint — ensuring every detail aligned with Studio Beck’s vision of sculptural objects designed to live with over time, and our ethos of quality over quantity.
THE COLLECTION TAKES SHAPE
With forms and finishes finalised, each piece was meticulously handmade in Barcelona using traditional hand-building techniques. Produced in limited quantities, every object reflects the nuances of the maker’s hand and the integrity of slow production. From studio shelves in Barcelona to their journey across the sea to Australia, Foundations represents not just a collection, but a collaboration shaped by time, trust, and shared values.
Eighteen months after that first meeting, Foundations arrives as the inaugural Studio Beck collection — a body of work defined by sculptural form and material integrity.
Designed by Studio Beck and handmade in Barcelona in collaboration with Taller Gingell, these are objects intended to be lived with — pieces that invite touch and carry the presence of the hand that made them.
We hope you love this collection as much as we do.
Love,
